From Hoya Hercules to NFL All-Star, a Life Cut Short

Albert Charles Blozis, known better as "Al," wasn't your average football player. He was a titan of a man, a gentle giant who dominated the gridiron and embodied the spirit of collegiate and professional athletics. His story is one of phenomenal strength, unwavering character, and a tragic twist of fate that left an indelible mark on the world of sports.

Born in Garfield, New Jersey, in 1919, Blozis's athletic prowess blossomed early. He excelled in football and track and field, standing at a towering 6-6 and weighing 245 pounds. At Georgetown University, he became a legend, earning the nickname "Hoya Hercules" for his dominance on the offensive line. He won three consecutive AAU and NCAA shot put titles, setting a world indoor record, and anchored the football team to two undefeated seasons.

In 1942, the NFL beckoned. The New York Giants drafted Blozis, and he quickly made his mark, earning All-Pro honors as a rookie. He was a force to be reckoned with, known for his devastating tackles and ability to clear paths for the Giants' running backs. His athleticism even earned him the nickname "the Human Bulldozer."

But World War II interrupted his burgeoning career. Blozis enlisted in the Army and served with distinction, setting the Army's hand-grenade throwing record with a toss of 94 yards. In 1945, tragedy struck. Just two weeks after arriving in France, Blozis was killed in action, leading a patrol to rescue wounded soldiers.

His death at the age of 26 sent shockwaves through the sports world. The New York Giants named their athletic center in Frankfurt, Germany, after him, and in 1986, he was inducted into the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame.

A Legend on Two Battlefields

John Beckett wasn't your typical football star. His legacy straddles two worlds - the gridiron and the battlefield - etching his name in both athletic and military history. Here's a summary of his remarkable career:

Football Accolades :

-All-around athlete playing tackle, halfback, and punter for the University of Oregon (1913-1916).

-Captain of the 1916 Oregon team, leading them to an undefeated record and a tie for the Pacific Coast Conference championship.

-Named Most Valuable Player of the 1917 Rose Bowl after leading Oregon to victory over Pennsylvania.

-Served as captain of the 1917 Marine Corps team, the only person ever to captain two Rose Bowl teams.

-Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1972.

Military Service (1917-1967):

-Enlisted in the Marines during his senior year at Oregon, serving with distinction for 50 years.

-Reached the rank of Brigadier General, earning medals for bravery and leadership in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

-Commanded the Fifth Marine Regiment during the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history.

-Coached Marine football teams at various stations, achieving an impressive 56-19-3 record.

John Beckett's career was a testament to human potential. He excelled in athletics, mastered the demands of military service, and led by example on and off the field. His story continues to inspire generations of athletes and soldiers, reminding us that true greatness lies not just in achievements but in the character and spirit with which we pursue them.

Kenny Washington

Born August 31, 1918, in Los Angeles, California, was Kenny Washington, a tailback hailing from UCLA. Washington has the destinction of being the first African American player to sign a contract in the NFL in the common era (after World War II) with the L.A. Rams after playing in the Pacific Coast League with the Hollywood Bears. As a collegian Kenny Washington rushed for 9,975 yards which was a Bruin record for over 56 years! He was also UCLA's very first ever consensus All-American in 1939. Mr. Washington was enshrined in the College Football hall of Fame in 1956.

Bear Bryant

Born September 11, 1913, in Arkansas, was College Football Hall of Fame Coach Paul Bear Bryant. Coach set a record (which was later broken) for the most games won in a collegiate coach's career, The majority of the NCAA victories came during his tenure (1958–82) at the University of Alabama. During his 25-year tenure as Alabama's head coach, he amassed six national championships and thirteen conference championships. Prior to heading up the Crimson Tide, Bryant was head football coach at the University of Maryland, the University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M University.

Gordon Locke

Born August 3, 1898, in Denison, Iowa was Gordon Locke was fullback from Iowa that entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1960. He was a key factor in Iowa's first ever game with rival Ohio State in 1926 as he rushed for 126 hard fought yards and 2 touchdowns per the FootballFoundation.org. After his playing days Mr. Locke became the head coach at Western Reserve University, which is now a part of Case-Western Reserve.

The Tight End Who Walked Away

Kenneth Adams MacAfee II wasn't your typical NFL superstar. His story isn't one of touchdowns and endorsements, but a rare tale of talent sacrificed for passion, woven into the fabric of both Notre Dame and the San Francisco 49ers.

MacAfee was a legend at Notre Dame. A three-time All-American, he dominated defenses with a blend of power and grace, nicknamed "The Golden Hammer" for his punishing blocks and acrobatic receptions. He anchored the 1977 national championship team and seemed destined for NFL stardom.

Yet, when the San Francisco 49ers drafted him seventh overall in 1978, a twist of fate awaited. While he struggled to adapt to the pro game, a different dream simmered beneath the surface – dentistry. This wasn't a whim; it was a lifelong passion, nurtured alongside his football prowess.

His NFL career remained respectable, but the whispers of the dental lab grew louder. In 1983, after two seasons with the 49ers, MacAfee made a decision that shook the football world. He traded the roar of the stadium for the hum of drills, walking away from his NFL career to pursue dentistry full-time.

The choice sparked debate. Some saw it as a missed opportunity, others a testament to integrity. MacAfee, however, remained unfazed. He thrived in his new realm, building a successful dental practice and even serving as president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Donny Anderson Packer HOF Halfback

Born May 16, 1943, in Borger, Texas, was Donny Anderson who was the 1963 to 1965 starting halfback of Texas Tech. Donny’s NFF bio lists that he was known as "The Golden Palomino" as a two-time All-America halfback 1964 and 1965. He had some splash plays almost from the get-go, for as a sophomore at Tech, he intercepted a pass and ran 43 yards against Washington State. As a junior his stat-line included a 90-yard run from scrimmage against Texas Christian and a 68-yard punt against Southern Methodist. The more he played the better he got. In his Senior season Donny was off the charts. That 1965 season Anderson ran a kickoff back 100 yards against Oklahoma State, caught ten passes against Arkansas, and scored 17 touchdowns on the season. The Sporting News named him co-winner (with Jim Grabowski of Illinois) of its Player of the Year Award. His 5111 yards on all-purpose running was a Texas Tech record. This includes his career yardage by rushing, receiving, kick returns, and interception returns. The National Football Foundation selected Donny Anderson for entrance into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Donny enjoyed nine seasons at the professional level as a player too. The Pro Football Reference website shares that he spent 6 seasons as a Green Bay Packer winning two Super Bowls and two NFL Championships and three more years as a St Louis Cardinal. During his NFL stint he tallied almost 4700 yards with a 3.9 yards per carry average.

Cal Hubbard

October 31, 1900 - Keytesville, Missouri - Cal Hubbard was born on that day and he was a tackle for Centenary and Geneva Colleges. The NFF informs us that Cal Hubbard played end and tackle for Centenary 1922-24 and then moved with his coach Bo McMillin to play one season at Geneva College 1926. Later as a pro Hubbard was a big tackle, standing 6-4 in height and weighing 250 pounds, for the New York Giants, Green Bay and Pittsburgh franchises. The College Football Hall of Fame added Cal to their lineup in 1962. The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined Cal Hubbard one year later in 1963 for back to back Hall of Fame Enshrinements! Believe it or not 13 years after that in 1976 Cal Hubbard was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as an umpire.
